Notifier has the recipe for success at Green’s Oyster Bar and Restaurant

25th October 2010

Like many other buildings in the City of London, 14 Cornhill boasts an illustrious history. Built in the late 17th century by a goldsmith, the site became a bank in 1728 and most recently was the centre of Lloyds Bank's Corporate Banking Division until its relocation to Kent in 2003.

The building was then gutted, with extra floors added to create prestigious offices, and also includes an exclusive gymnasium. In 2008, the ground floor and first floor was acquired by Green's to create its second Restaurant and Oyster Bar in Central London. As part of this, Notifier Engineered System Distributor (ESD), Arena Fire Systems Ltd, has installed a Notifier ID50 addressable single loop fire panel to provide superior yet highly cost-effective fire safety protection.

"In meeting Green's demanding requirements, the ID50 has proved the perfect choice, " says Salve Tirone, project manager, Arena Fire, "as since the restaurant opened to the public, it has proved both trouble-free and easy to use".

Spectacular dining experience

With the success of the first restaurant in St James's, established in 1982, the Green's brand is now Greens Restaurantwell-established. The new restaurant, which incorporates the splendid Grade II listed former Lloyds Bank banking hall, is looking to build on this as it combines the old-world elegance of St James's with a more contemporary design and feel. Opened in September 2009, the early signs are encouraging: "The booths overlooking the Bank of England are already among the most sought-after tables in the City," says operational manager, Laurent Lucas-Dufour.

"In acquiring such an important site, all elements of this fundamental change of use had to be of the highest specification, in order to ensure a first-class dining experience," he confirms. "As part of this, in selecting a fire alarm solution we required a system that was highly robust in minimising the risk of false alarms, was cost-efficient both to purchase and maintain and would integrate with the main building's fire alarm system."
Arena Fire had already installed a Notifier ID3000 panel to provide fire safety protection for the main building, together with a second, networked ID3000 for the gymnasium and continued to provide maintenance services for the site.

"On the one hand, an ID50 provided the most obvious solution in integrating seamlessly with the primary Notifier system," confirms Tirone. "However, in proposing this solution, we also recognised that the ID50's class-leading functionality, price competitiveness and compact design were well-suited to a smaller restaurant environment such as Green's."

Integrated solution

The ID50 Series are self-contained, on-site programmable intelligent fire alarm panels. They can be programmed either from the panel keypad or a personal computer using the off-line Windows-based configuration tool. The ‘Auto-Learn' facility allows the user to install and commission a standard system with the minimum of effort and the panel software also allows simple upgrading on-site.

"As one of the most complete and powerful single loop intelligent alarm panels on the market, the ID50 is ideally-suited for smaller system configurations such as restaurants, shopping units, small warehouses or industrial units, where there are no complex Cause and Effect (C&E) requirements," says Tirone.

"However, in the case of the Green's Restaurant installation there has been the additional benefit that, as the ID50 is programmed into the main ID3000 system, it forms part of the whole building's broader C&E matrix, ensuring a strictly-controlled response throughout the site in the event of any alarm, wherever it arises.

Implementation was straightforward, on budget and on schedule for the restaurant opening in autumn 2009. "Companies like Green's simply want an affordable, ‘fit and forget' fire alarm system that works, allowing them to get on with their business without unnecessary interruption," says Derek Portsmouth, national business manager UK and Ireland, Notifier by Honeywell.

"In responding to this, the ID50 offers a robust, flexible and intuitive solution which is both quick and easy to install and simple for security and other staff to operate."
